How to mark direct discourse when quotation marks are not available?

Compared to modern quotation practices, Latin authors did not use quotation marks or other typographical signs as we do. Thus, they had to rely on quotative markers and/or the reading experience of their audiences. The lecture will focus on various marking strategies and practices used in Classical Latin and their development up to the eighth century C.E. It will show innovations, changes in frequency and the origin of a peculiar mixture of devices. In addition, the insight into direct discourse marking in Latin can lead us to think about its marking and functions across time.
