Exhibition: Cicero in Letters or the Life of Man

A panel exhibition in honour of the publication of a monumental collection of the correspondence of Marcus Tullius Cicero (106-43 BC), a leading Roman orator, politician and writer. The collection of 550 letters was compiled and translated by Václav Marek, historian of ancient history at the Institute of Greek and Latin Studies, Faculty of Philosophy, Charles University.

Cicero's letters are an important testimony to the crisis and demise of the Roman Republic. However, Cicero also reveals in them a rich range of emotions and qualities that we do not normally associate with him. Here he appears arrogant, vain and scornful, sometimes indecisive, fearful and despairing, or loving and caring. The exhibition pays tribute to Cicero not as a historical figure but as a man who did not hesitate to fight for his ideals.

It will be on display in the foyer of B2 until Easter.
